The Repentant Peter

The Repentant Peter

The Repentant Peter
1616

Hendrick ter Brugghen

Wringing his hands in intense sorrow, Peter the Apostle looks above, in direction of the light. The keys of the heavenly gate – his attribute – hang on the wall behind him. Although the signature and date are original, the attribution of this painting to Ter Brugghen is not generally accepted. However, if it is painted by him, The repentant Peter is his earliest surviving painting.
